Sharyn Kervyn de Volkaersbeke is passionate about wine. Her entire professional career has been devoted to this Industry; learning and sharing her knowledge with the staff she trains, at lectures, seminars, and with fellow enthusiasts in the wine organizations to which she belongs.  Sharyn is a member of the Association of Wine Educators (AWE), a prestigious group of individuals committed to Inform, Inspire and Educate.  She is also a member of the Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET), Society of Wine Educators (SWE), a ‘Tastevin’ level member of The Dionysian Wine Society Intenational and the American Wine Society (AWS).  For AWS, she served as the National Tasting Project Chair from 2016 to 2021,  Regional Vice President from 2017 to 2019 and is currently a national wine educator and creator of WineSmarts II.  She is a Certified Wine Judge with Merit (CWJM) with AWS,  Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW) with SWE, and Sommelier through the Court of Master Sommeliers.   Sharyn is also a WSET Diploma graduate with honors (dipWSET, their highest level 4, a prerequisite to Master of Wine).  In addition, Sharyn teaches wine education at area colleges, including Rutger’s University and Camden County College.

As an International Wine Judge, Sharyn has been judging annually for Amateur and Commercial Competitions across the country since 2010, including renowned International Competitions such as the Sommelier’s Choice Awards, USA Wine Ratings, Texas International, The Great American and the Finger Lakes International.  She has also judged OIV Frankfurt and Concours Lyon International and invitations to judge the International Wine Challenge (IWC) in London, OIV Berlin and Women’s International Trophy competitions in Europe.

Sharyn founded KdV Wine Services in 2021, upon  her retirement from Capital Grille, offering consulting, wine and service training and cellar services to area restaurants and wineries.  KdV also provides wine education services to commercial and residential clients.

The Early Years

Having grown up in her family’s restaurant, specializing in wine was a natural progression for Sharyn. Throughout her career she expanded operations for multi-unit chains, increasing profits and creating popular neighborhood venues through special events and promotions. She opened the Getty Center Museum in Los Angeles in 1997 as their Catering Director, developing their standards of service (still in use today).  In Beverly Hills, she restructured a dining venue for Barneys New York and created elaborate on and off-premise events for Hollywood Elite. At every location, Sharyn was also the wine director, training the staff and overseeing the Wine Lists.  She has consistently earned “Best Of” Wine Spectator Awards for her lists at The Capital Grille locations where she worked for more than a decade. Sharyn also serves on the Wine Education Committee for AWS, serving as a National Wine Educator. Sharyn founded KdV Wine Services in 2021, specializing in Food and Wine events, commercial video and wine list services, gourmet picnics, cellar stocking services, and more.
